Prayer to Break the Spirit of Unforgiveness 2
Unforgiveness of oneself
- Others don’t forgive me
If the person we have offended does not forgive us, we may feel bad and feel that we should wait to "free" ourselves from the guilt later.
Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. (Luke 6:36)
- Shame culture
Shame is a big part of some cultures. Children are taught to behave so they don't become a disgrace to the family, people openly avoid relatives they are ashamed to see, and social media shows us what we should have and look like. In a culture like this, it's hard for Christians to truly believe that God forgives and accepts us without any conditions attached, because the world constantly reminds us that we are not good enough.
Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
- Being controlled by emotions
The Bible says that we are to die to the flesh, which includes wanting to control our emotional reactions. When we sin, we feel sad, regret, shame, pain, anger, and depression.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13)
- Falling into Satan’s accusations
Jesus defeated Satan, the accuser who wants us to join him in eternal condemnation. Even if we receive complete forgiveness from God, he will continue to taunt and accuse us until we agree with him and turn away from God. Satan will put all kinds of ideas into our minds that are contrary to the truth.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)
For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. (1 John 3:20)
- Pride is the root of our unforgiveness
Our pride causes us to think we have the right to look down on others or ourselves. The worst kind of pride is spiritual pride, when we mistakenly believe we are more righteous than others and place ourselves on a higher moral level.
For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. (Galatians 6:3)
Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished. (Proverbs 16:5)
Cut off and break
In the name of Jesus Christ, I cut off and break the following forces of unforgiveness:
- Connection to bad role models growing up
- The invincible pressure of worldly affairs
- Past disappointments in life
- The offender is unwilling to admit his fault
- Unresolved emotions
- Guilt
- Shame culture
- All emotional control that is not in line with God’s will
- Satan's Accusation
- The Poisonous Root of Pride
Abba Father, dear Lord Jesus Christ, mighty Holy Spirit, Triune God, today I come before you to confess and repent for the unforgiveness of others and myself caused by sin in my personal life and family. I admit and want to break and renounce the sins of unforgiveness that I, my family and ancestors have committed, as well as their agreement with the devil's lies, some wrong belief systems and the behaviors that have resulted from them.
